The Green Homes Grant is the latest government scheme, which has launched this week, providing funds to make energy-saving upgrades to properties throughout the UK.

The Government funded scheme will provide a voucher that covers up to two-thirds of the cost of qualifying improvements to your property.  A maximum amount of £5,000 will be granted to Landlords to put towards insulation and low carbon heating.

For example, every £1 you spend, the Government will top up with £2, so for £5,000 worth of work you would pay £1,667 and the receive a voucher for £3,333.  The Grant is provided per property rather than per person, therefore Landlords can save thousands updating a large property portfolio.

And best of all not only will this benefit you as the landlord by saving money, it will also benefit your tenants by reducing their utility bills.

To see if your properties are eligible for the Green Homes Grant all you need to do is follow these 3 simple steps:

  1. Fill out a simple questionnaire at the Simple Energy Advice website here
  2. Once you have conformation your property is eligible, Simple Energy Advice will provide a list of local accredited suppliers for you to contact for a quote.
  3. Once you have received your quote, apply for the voucher online (this is now open until 31st March 2020)

The Green Homes Grant will allow you to make improvements which include insulation and low carbon heat products.  These have been divided into ‘Primary’ and ‘Secondary’ categories.  The voucher must be used to install at least one primary measure, and once a primary measure is confirmed you can also claim for a secondary measure.

The Primary Measures

  • These cover insulation and low carbon heat options

Insulation Options

  • Solid Wall
  • Underfloor
  • Cavity Wall
  • Loft
  • Flat roof
  • Room in roof
  • Insulating a park home

Low Carbon Heating Options

  • Air or ground source heat pump
  • Solar thermal
  • Biomass Boilers

The Secondary Measures

  • Draught proofing
  • Double/triple glazing (replacing single glazed windows)
  • Secondary glazing (in addition to single glazing)
  • External energy efficient doors (replacing single glazed or solid doors installed before 2002)
  • Heating controls
  • Hot water tank thermostats and insulation.

Further information for your reference:

  • You cannot apply for a secondary measure on its own.
  • The vouchers cannot be used to replace insulation or low carbon heating measures that are already in place, but they can be used to ‘top-up’ existing measures (for example, installing additional loft insulation up to the recommended level).
  • The amount requested for the second measure cannot exceed the amount you receive for the primary measure.
  • You should only enter a commitment to carry out the work once you have had confirmation that your voucher application has been accepted.
  • The installer will request and receive payment from the government for the costs covered by the voucher.
  • The work will need to be completed before the 31st March to receive the voucher.
  • All vouchers will be subject to T’s and C’s.
